چکیده

This paper presents a model of collaborative discourse which integrates problem-solving, discourse, dialogue initiative and connict resolution. Experimental evidence obtained from an implementation of this theory demonstrates the eeectiveness of dialogue initiative and connict resolution within the model. 1 Motivation Two recently implemented voice dialogue systems utilize the principle that discourse is a by-product of cooperative problem-solving 11, 14]. The computer participant in both of these systems proceeds by attempting to prove or solve some goal, and when the system is blocked, it has the option of using dialogue to obtain the necessary information in order to continue its proof. This dialogue mechanism has been described as the missing axiom theory of discourse 10]. This paper extends this theory to develop a uniied model of collabora-tive discourse within the missing axiom theory framework which provides for collaborative behaviors not obtainable from previous versions of the missing axiom theory: 1) automatic adjustment of levels of initiative between participants during a discourse and 2) generation of certain important classes of statements (negotiation and summaries). Furthermore, this paper presents experimental data obtained through an implementation of this model which illustrates an increase in eeciency due to these additional dialogue behaviors.

A Collaborative Planning Model of Intentional Structure

An agent's ability to understand an utterance depends upon its ability to relate that utterance to the preceding discourse. The agent must determine whether the utterance begins a new segment of the discourse, completes the current segment, or contributes to it. The intentional structure of the discourse, comprised of discourse segment purposes and their interrelationships, plays a central role...

Group Communication Analysis: A Computational Linguistics Approach for Detecting Sociocognitive Roles in Multi-Party Interactions

This talk will present results from recent work that uses language and discourse to capture social dynamics during collaborative interactions. I will introduce group communication analysis (GCA), a novel approach for detecting emergent learner roles from the participants’ contributions and patterns of interaction. This method makes use of automated computational linguistic analysis of the seque...

A Computational Model of Dialogue Initiative in Collaborative Discourse

This paper presents a model of dialogue initiative within a collaborative discourse. The importance of varying initiative between participants is validated both in theory and in experiments. For example, it was found that one initiative setting algorithm was up to 50% better than if initiative is random. Furthermore, a method for varying levels of initiative between participants is presented wh...

Discourse and Deliberation- Testing a Collaborative Strategy

A discourse strategy is a strategy for communicating with another agent. Designing effective dialogue systems requires designing agents that can choose among discourse strategies. We claim that the design of effective strategies must take cognitive factors into account, propose a new method for testing the hypothesized factors, and present experimental results on an effective strategy for suppo...
